When it comes to getting an eSIM in Miami, there are a few things you should know. First and foremost, what exactly is an eSIM? An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that allows you to store multiple phone numbers on one device without the need for physical SIM cards.
Nowadays, more and more mobile devices are coming equipped with eSIM capabilities, making it easier for users to switch between plans and carriers without having to physically swap SIM cards. This is particularly useful for travelers as they can easily purchase and activate a local data plan without the hassle of buying a physical SIM card.
In Miami, eSIMs are becoming increasingly popular due to the city’s status as a major tourist destination and its vibrant international community. With an eSIM, tourists and locals alike can easily switch between plans or carriers to find the best coverage and rates for their needs.
So how do you actually get an eSIM in Miami? The process is fairly simple. Firstly, make sure your device is compatible with eSIM technology. Most newer smartphones, such as the latest iPhone and Google Pixel models, come equipped with eSIM capabilities. However, it’s always best to check with your device manufacturer or carrier to confirm compatibility.
Next, you can either purchase an eSIM plan directly from a local carrier in Miami or through a third-party provider. Some popular carriers in Miami that offer eSIM plans include AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. You can also purchase eSIM plans from providers like Truphone and GigSky, which specialize in international eSIM options.
Once you have purchased your eSIM plan, you will receive a QR code or activation code. Simply scan the QR code or enter the activation code into your device to activate your eSIM. It’s important to note that you may need an internet connection to complete this process
Airalo
Airalo makes it super simple to activate and use an e-sim. Their plans typically are data only packages, so you won’t be able to call or use SMS features. You’ll still be able to use apps such as Facebook Messenger, Line, WhatsApp, and WeChat as you’ll have an active data plan – all of these apps you can place calls on to other people that use these apps.
Airalo plans start at about $5 and can be found here https://www.airalo.com/united-states-esim
Setup is simple and you can do it inside of their app on your iPhone or Android device. You will need an internet (wifi) connection to set it up for the first time. You can also buy refills in the app if you run out of data, which would also require internet access.
Airalo plans are perfect for people who are just stopping in Miami and need access to the internet for a few days.
T-Mobile
T-Mobile USA offers a prepaid esim program, perfect if you are staying in Miami for a more extended period of time OR if you require a phone number for local calls and text messages and can’t just rely on WhatsApp.
You can download the T-Mobile esim app and get activated if your phone has esim capability and is unlocked. Plans start at $40 per month.

AT&T
Another prepaid option that you can use, especially if you need a SMS and calling capabilities while in Miami is AT&T. They allow you to setup the e-sim in an app, the same way T-Mobile does. Plans start at $40 per month with most taxes and fees included in the price.
Google Fi
Google Fi is an e-sim solution that you can use. Now, the last time we used Google Fi, we had to wait for a physical sim card to activate the e-sim capabilities. This could have changed from the last time we used it but you may have to wait for your setup kit from Google which can take a week, not ideal if you’re looking for an e-sim for a short trip to Miami.
However, Google Fi is the most flexible option that we know of. Plans start at $20 per month and it’s based on the amount of data that you use. Calling and texting is also unlimited. The other big benefit with Google Fi is that you can use it to roam internationally for no additional fee. For us, this has worked well in the US, Peru, Belize, Brazil, England, and Colombia with no issues.
The biggest benefit with their international roaming is the fact that data speeds are normally high speed, unlike other US carriers that give you slow 3G connections when traveling abroad (looking at you, T-Mobile).
More solutions to be added soon.
